PM Modi Asks Jaishankar, Doval, Officials To Focus On Immediate Priorities In Afghanistan

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and a high-level group of senior officials to focus on India’s immediate priorities in Afghanistan, ANI reported.

This group has been meeting regularly over the last few days amid the ongoing Afghanistan crisis.

According to ANI sources, the group is seizing issues related to the safe return of stranded Indians, travel of Afghan nationals, especially minorities, to India and assures that the territory of Afghanistan will be used for terrorism against India.

“In view of the evolving situation in Afghanistan, Prime Minister had recently directed that a high-level group comprising of EAM, NSA and senior officials focus on the immediate priorities of India,” said the ANI sources.

Sources said the group is monitoring the ground situation in Afghanistan and the international response, including the resolution passed by the UN Security Council this morning.

The UN Security Council under the Indian chairmanship has adopted a resolution on Afghanistan in which the member states reiterated the importance of combating terrorism in Afghanistan and noted the relevant commitments of the Taliban.

The resolution called on the Taliban to facilitate safe passage for those wishing to leave Afghanistan, allow humanitarians to enter the country, and uphold human rights, including those of women and children.

On Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that India is closely monitoring the situation in Afghanistan and is in touch with other countries as well.

India has evacuated more than 550 people in six different flights, either from Kabul or Tajikistan’s capital Dushanbe, more than 260 of them were Indians.

New Delhi also facilitated the evacuation of Indian nationals through other agencies and are in touch with various countries, like the US, Tajikistan, Iran and others.
