PM Modi Looting India With Bag Full Of False Promises: Rahul Gandhi

Mumbai: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticised the Centre over fuel price hike in India and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “looting” India with bags full of “false” promises.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the hike in fuel prices, saying the PM always carries false promises in his bag. Gandhi shared a tweet comparing petrol prices across the globe, with India having the highest petrol price.

“In Indian rupees, Petrol in Afghanistan costs Rs 66.99, in Pakistan Rs 62.38, Sri Lanka Rs 72.96, Bangladesh Rs 78.53, Bhutan Rs 86.28, Nepal Rs 97.05, while in India it is at Rs 101.81 per litre”, Gandhi tweeted.

Fuel prices continue to rise with petrol and diesel prices hiked by 80 paise per litre on Thursday, an increase of around Rs 6.40 per litre in nine revisions in 10 days so far.

Petrol now costs Rs 101.81 per litre in the national capital, while diesel is being sold at Rs 93.07 per litre. Petrol and diesel prices have increased by 84 paise in Mumbai, thus costing Rs 116.72 and Rs 100.94 per litre.

Petrol price in Chennai is Rs 107.45 (an increase by 76 paise) per litre and diesel price at Rs 97.52 (an increase of 76 paise) per litre. The price of petrol in Kolkata is Rs 111.35 per litre (an increase of 83 paise) and that of diesel at Rs 96.22 per litre (an increase of 80 paise).

There was a pause in the revision of fuel prices from November 4 last year, which was broken on March 22, after crude oil went up in the wake of Russian military operations in Ukraine.

Significantly, on November 3 last year, the Center had cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and on diesel by Rs 10 per litre to reduce retail prices across the country.

Subsequently, several state governments reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to provide relief to the people.
