Among those present at the meeting were external affairs minister S Jaishankar, national security advisor Ajit Doval and foreign secretary Harshvardhan Shringla. Lavrov was also accompanied by two officials.

Lavrov is in the national capital on Thursday evening on a two-day visit following a trip to China.

Lavrov held talks with external affairs minister S Jaishankar earlier in the day, following which he talked about “very good relations” between the two nations that ensured the continuation of bilateral trade notwithstanding Western sanctions.

Russia’s foreign minister’s visit to India came amid heavy condemnation of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine by the United States and its Western allies, which was now over a month old.

Modi had earlier held phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, March 2 and March 7. He also spoke twice with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
