Political Drama: Minister Naqvi Amid Demands For CAA Withdrawal

Mumbai: Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has termed demands for the withdrawal of the CAA and restoration of Article 370 “political drama”.

Naqvi said CAA will help those “oppressed” in neighbouring countries attain Indian citizenship, while Article 370 has helped resolve several issues in J&K and Ladakh. Also Read: Withdraw CAA Or Protesters Will Take To Streets In UP: Owaisi

Prime Minister Modi on Friday announced that the government will withdraw three agriculture laws.

Soon after the announcement, Muslim leaders urged the Prime Minister to withdraw the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), while leaders in Jammu and Kashmir demanded the restoration of Article 370.

“Political drama has begun. Somebody says CAA should be repealed, abrogation of Article 370 should be scrapped. They know it well that CAA is not about taking away citizenship but providing citizenship to oppressed minorities in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan,” Naqvi said during a press meet in Moradabad.

“With the abrogation of Article 370, a lot of issues have been resolved in J&K and Ladakh and people have been brought to the mainstream. They are also becoming a part of the political process,” he added.

The controversial CAA, which grants Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, was invoked by Parliament in 2019 triggering widespread protests in various parts of the country.

In August 2019, the Center abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories.

The Prime Minister in a televised address to the nation on Friday said that the Centre will take constitutional measures to repeal the three laws in the coming Winter session of Parliament beginning from November 29.
