Politicians Giving Lollipops In Last 2 Months Ahead Of Polls: Sidhu

Sidhu’s remark came after Channi announced slashing of the power tariff by Rs 3 per unit for the domestic sector

Mumbai: Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday said that politicians have been offering “lollipops, this is free, that is free” in the last two months ahead of state elections.

The cricketer-turned-politician attacked the Channi’s own party-led government in the state and urged people to vote only on the agenda of Punjab’s welfare.

“Give people ‘lollipops’ in the last two months. The question is from where they’ll (govt) give it? Is the objective just to form govt by telling lies & making false promises? Way of Punjab’s welfare comes from a roadmap,” Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Sidhu’s remark came after Channi announced slashing of the power tariff by Rs 3 per unit for the domestic sector and increasing the dear allowance for government employees.

He further asked people to question politicians as to what is the intention behind forming a government.

“There should be a question in your mind whether the intention is only government formation or coming to power after speaking lies, making 500 promises or the welfare of the state,” Sidhu said.

He added that politics has become a profession and it is no longer a mission.

Sidhu also blamed the previous governments in the state for Punjab’s outstanding debt of Rs 5 lakh crore and said that he would die but never sell Punjab’s interests.

He added the debt is to be paid by the people of the state and attacked those who maintained that the state coffers are full.

If that is the case, the state government must give Rs 50,000 as salary to the ETT (Elementary Teacher Training) teachers and pay the contractual teachers, he said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who are also contesting elections in the state, has also called the Punjab government’s decision “a poll stunt”. They alleged that the move is aimed at “buying” votes in the run-up to the assembly elections early next year.

Last month, a video went viral on social media in which Sidhu had said that Congress is in a dying stage and Channi will sink the grand old party in 2022.

Punjab goes to Assembly elections next year in February.
