Ever since Congress did not give him a ticket, Kang was threatening that his son Yadvinder Singh Kang would contest as an independent from Kharar seat.

Kang was the Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries in the Amarinder Singh-led government in 2002–07.
