Rajasthan Declares ‘Black Fungus’ An Epidemic And A Notifiable Disease

Mumbai: Rajasthan government on Wednesday declared Mucormycosis or ‘black fungus’ as an epidemic and a notifiable disease in the state.

Mucormycosis has been notified as an epidemic and a notable disease in the state under the Rajasthan Epidemic Act 2020, read the notification issued by Akhil Arora, the chief health secretary of Rajasthan.

On 14 May, Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited (RMSCL) ordered Bharat Serum & Vaccines Limited to purchase 2,500 vials of liposomal amphotericin B, which is used as a drug against black fungus.

As the country is under pressure from the second wave of the COVID pandemic, the Black Fungus Disease has also raised concerns across the country.

Mucormycosis or black fungus is a complication caused by a fungal infection. People catch mucormycosis by coming into contact with fungal spores in the environment.

According to the Union Ministry of Health, it can develop on the skin even after entering the skin through bites, scratches, burns or other types of skin trauma.

The disease is being detected among patients who are recovering or have recovered from COVID-19. Moreover, anyone who is diabetic and whose immune system is not functioning well needs to be on the guard against this, the ministry has said.
