Rajya Sabha Pays Homage To Lata Mangeshkar, Proceedings Adjourned For 1 Hr

Mumbai: Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday made an obituary reference to veteran singer and former member of the House Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92.

Rajya Sabha members also observed a minute’s silence as they paid tribute to the legendary singer. The house will reconvene at 11:05 am.

“With the passing away of Lata Mangeshkar, the country has lost a great playback singer, a kind human being and a great personality in the world of Indian music and film industry. Her passing away marks the end of an era and has created an irreparable void in the world of music,” said,” Naidu in the house.

He said, “Besides defining the gold standard of playback singing through his thousands of melodious songs in multiple languages, he has captured every mood, moment and journey of our country for more than seven decades.”

He said, “His distinguished and long career ran parallel to that of independent India over the past 75 years, which included the trials and tribulations of time. India is silent on his demise in the 75th year of independence.”

Lata Mangeshkar was a nominated member of the Upper House from November 1999 to November 2005. Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday at the age of 92.

He was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on January 8 after suffering from COVID-19 and pneumonia. The veteran singer was cremated with full state honours at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on Sunday.
