Ranil Wickremesinghe Elected As New President Of Sri Lanka Amid Economic Crisis

Mumbai: Amid the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe was on Wednesday elected as the new President of the country.

This comes after Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country along with his wife, resigned from the post.

The 73-year-old Sri Lankan leader got 134 votes in the 225-member House, while his nearest rival Alhapparuma got 82 votes. A candidate needs at least 113 votes to win an election. Dissanayake got only three votes.

Wickremesinghe will have a mandate to complete the rest of Rajapaksa’s term, which expires in November 2024, as the people of Sri Lanka believe in new leadership to solve the dire economic crisis.
