Russia Starts ‘Pulling Back’ Troops From Ukrainian Borders

Mumbai: Russia confirmed on Tuesday that some of its troops had withdrawn from Ukrainian borders, raising fears of a possible attack after Russian forces build up around the European country.

In an official statement, a Russian Defense Ministry said, “Units of the Southern and Western Military Districts, having completed their tasks, have already begun loading onto rail and road transport and today they will begin moving to their military garrisons.”

The withdrawal of troops was announced ahead of a scheduled meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

It should be noted that Russia deployed more than 100,000 troops around Ukraine, a former Soviet country, prompting European leaders and the United States to warn of broad economic penalties if Moscow goes ahead with its invasion plans.

The US and its Western allies have been strongly critical of Russia’s continued military build-up along the Ukrainian border. The US has already sent additional troops to Europe to support its allies in the backdrop of fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Tensions have been heightened by Russian military exercises near Ukraine and Belarus, where the United States says about 30,000 troops are taking part in the exercise that will last until February 20.
