‘Save the Saviour’ : IMA Demands Law Against Assault On Healthcare Workers

Mumbai: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday said it is the responsibility of the central government to ensure the safety of health workers and demanded a law against attacks on doctors and nurses.

The medical body further announced it will launch a protest of healthcare workers on June 18 against the assaults with the ‘Save the Saviour’ slogan.

During a press conference, IMA President JA Jayalal said, “IMA will lead the protest of healthcare workers against the attack on health professionals with the slogan ‘Save the Savior’ on June 18.”

“No hospital will be closed. Doctors will wear black badges, black masks or black shirts,” he confirmed.

Dr Jayalal further pointed out that doctors serving in COVID wards were beaten up and brutally in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, UP and Karnataka.

He stressed that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety of frontline workers working in the pandemic.

Putting up their demands, the IMA president said, “We demand that the government bring a central security law with provisions of CrPC and IPC and also ensure that all government and private hospitals have a mandatory security structure.”

Meanwhile, the voluntary medical organization announced that 719 doctors have lost their lives due to coronavirus in the second wave of the COVID pandemic that has recorded the highest death toll in Bihar.

Bihar recorded 111 deaths, Delhi -109, Uttar Pradesh -79, West Bengal -63, and Rajasthan -43.

Among the southern states, Andhra Pradesh reported 35 deaths, while 36 doctors succumbed to the virus in Telangana. Tamil Nadu recorded 32 deaths, while Karnataka and Kerala reported 9 and 24 deaths, respectively.
