Thane Mayor Seeks Additional Doses Of COVID-19 Vaccines

Mumbai: Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to demand more doses of COVID-19 vaccines in view of the “increasing demand” from the people.

Mhaske said Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) received 1,62,500 doses of the Covishield vaccine, out of which 94,042 doses were used while 68,458 doses are in stock.

The current stock of Covaxin supplements, out of 39,220, is 20,825. A total of 1,12,437 eligible people have been vaccinated so far in TMC areas.

Mhaske, who wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said that the available stocks of both vaccines would be insufficient in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the near future and TMC expanding its vaccination campaign. The civic body had recently given permission to private hospitals to administer the shots.

Mhaske said the TMC has a centralised vaccine storage facility in Thane city which can provide space for vaccination to other civic bodies.

In March 23, the tally of COVID-19 cases in the Thane district stood at 2,93,154.
