Third Nirbhaya Convict Files Mercy Petition Before President

Mumbai: Akshay Thakur, who was awarded death sentence in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, filed a mercy petition before the President of India on Saturday. Thakur has become the third convict in the mercy petition filed before the President.

So far, President Ram Nath Kovind has rejected the mercy petitions of Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh, convicted in the case. Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Friday stayed the execution of the four convicts in the case, which was earlier scheduled to be held on February 1.

A Delhi court had earlier issued a death warrant for convicts — Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma — for their execution on February 1.
