TN Amends Law To Protect LGBTQ+ People From Police Harassment

Mumbai: In a move to ensure the protection of LGBTQ+ people from any harassment, the Tamil Nadu government has amended the Tamil Nadu Subordinate Police Officers’ Conduct Rules.

The amendment to the Conduct Rules of Tamil Nadu Subordinate Police Officers was published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday. A few months back, the Madras High Court had asked the state administration to sensitize the police force with regard to LGBTQIA issues.

“No police officer shall engage in any act of harassment of any person belonging to the LGBTQIA (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual) + Community and the persons working for the welfare of the said community,” said the order issued by the government, signed by additional chief secretary SK Prabhakar.

In September last year, hearing petitions of two women who ran away from home after being harassed and harassed by their families, the Madras HC passed several orders to eliminate discrimination and prejudice against the community.

Judge Anand Venkatesh issued a special order asking the administration to stop police harassment of same-sex couples, saying the behaviour stemmed from apathy and lack of awareness.
