TN Lifts COVID-19 Curbs; Vaccination No Longer Compulsory To Visit Public Places

Mumbai: In view of the improving COVID-19 situation, the Tamil Nadu government on Sunday lifted all restrictions in the state and also announced that vaccination against coronavirus is no longer compulsory to visit public places.

The Office of the Director of Public Health and Prevention encouraged people to follow COVID-appropriate behaviours such as maintaining social distance, wearing face masks, washing hands and avoiding crowds.

“To reduce the number of COVID-19 cases in the state and remove all restrictions set by the Government of India to contain COVID-19, Tamil Nadu is achieving vaccination coverage of more than 92 per cent and 75 per cent of first and second dose respectively, for those above 18 years, it is decided to withdraw the notification issued under Tamil Nadu Public Health Act,1939 vide reference 9th cited with immediate effect,” the notification said.

The MK Stalin-led government in a notification said the state has achieved vaccine coverage of more than 92 per cent of the first dose and over 75 per cent of the second dose for people above 18 years of age.

Only 23 new cases were reported in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The state, which reached the peak of the third wave in January with more than 30,000 new cases due to the Omicron version, reported 275 active cases in the latest surge. This is the fourth-highest overall case count in the country.

While countries across the world are witnessing a surge in coronavirus cases due to the emergence of the new Covid variant, India on Monday reported 913 fresh cases and 81 deaths due to the coronavirus infection.

According to the Ministry of Health, the total active cases in India currently stand at 12,597. According to the Ministry of Health, India’s recovery rate is currently 98.76 per cent.
