Why Are Kids Being Forced To Go To School: SC To Delhi Govt On Air Pollution

Mumbai: Commenting on Delhi’s air pollution, the Supreme Court asked the Delhi government that when the government implemented work from home for adults why children are being forced to go to school.

The top court has asked the Delhi government why children are being forced to go to school when the elderly are working from home due to excessive air pollution. The Supreme Court has also expressed concern that despite the increase in the level of air pollution, nothing is happening.

The central government told the Supreme Court that non-compliant industries were shut down and state governments were informed. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said that things are going at jet speed and officials are working round the clock, news agency ANI reported.

The Center has also said that it is equally concerned about the lethal pollution levels in Delhi. SG Tushar Mehta assured that strict steps will be taken to check the pollution level.

He said he would speak to the highest authorities and take additional measures to improve the air quality and deal with the crisis, for which he sought 24 hours. According to SG, the main sources of pollution are industries and vehicles.

CJI NV Ramana expressed dismay and said, “What is the use of the 20-30 member committee (Air Commission)? It is nothing but another burden on the examiner. I think we will have to do something extraordinary. It’s sad that bureaucracy is not taking any innovative steps.”

The Supreme Court has set a deadline of 24 hours for the Centre and State Govt to take steps, strict actions by tomorrow. The Supreme Court said, “if you don’t act, we will step in”. The next hearing will be held tomorrow at 10 am, the apex court said.
