You Have Strangulated Delhi, Blocked National Highways And Trains: SC To Farmers

Mumbai: After farmers’ body Kisan Mahapanchayat sought permission from Supreme Court to hold a ‘Satyagraha at Jantar Mantar, the apex court said, “You have strangulated the entire city, now you want to come inside the city.”

Hearing the petition, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar asked, “Why have you approached the Supreme Court? You can approach the High Court for this permission.”

In a series of comments, he further said that the farmers have strangled the entire city and now want to enter the city and protest.

“You are obstructing everything and even heckling security people,” he added.

Through their petition, the farmers were seeking direction from the authorities to allow them to hold a dharna at Jantar Mantar as per the permission of the United Kisan Morcha (SKM).

This comes a day after the top court questioned how highways can be blocked “forever” and said it is the duty of the executive to implement a court-prescribed law that deals with protests in public places.

These comments come in the clear context of the October 7, 2020 judgment relating to road blockade by farmers protesting along the borders of Delhi and the anti-CAA protest at Shaheen Bagh here, in which the apex court has made it public cannot be occupied for a period of time and demonstrations expressing dissatisfaction should be held at designated places alone.
