147 Foreigners Brought To India During Evacuation From Ukraine: Govt

On 24 February, the central government started ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring back stranded Indians from Ukraine

Mumbai: As many as 147 foreign nationals of 18 countries were rescued and brought to India during the evacuation process of Indians from Ukraine, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said, “In line with India’s principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, foreign nationals were also evacuated from conflict zones and brought to India.”

“They include 147 nationals from 18 countries and several Ukrainian nationals who are family members of Indian nationals have also been evacuated,” the minister said.

He also pointed out that evacuating Sumi was extremely complicated as our students were facing the possibility of getting caught in the crossfire.

“Their evacuation from the city required a credible ceasefire, which ultimately led to the personal intervention of the PM himself with the presidents of Ukraine and Russia,” he said.

S Jaishankar was to make a statement on the current situation in Ukraine in the Rajya Sabha at 2.30 pm today.

In the second part of the budget session in Parliament, Jaishankar spoke on India’s stand on the rescue operation to evacuate Indian students from war zones in Ukraine and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

On 24 February, the central government started ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring back stranded Indians from Ukraine.

Four Union ministers Kiren Rijiju, Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Gen (retd) VK Singh were sent by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ukraine to coordinate efforts to rescue stranded Indians in neighboring countries.

In recent months, ‘Operation Ganga’ has been India’s largest evacuation drive to bring back stranded Indians after operation ‘Devi Shakti’ was launched by the Narendra Modi government in Afghanistan last year.
