India-England Day-Night Test Becomes Shortest Test Since World War II

Mumbai: The third India-England Test in Ahmedabad is the shortest completed match in terms of balls in Test cricket since World War II (1939 to 1945). A total of 842 deliveries were bowled in the Test across two days.

145.2 overs were bowled in the New Zealand vs Australia Test match at Wellington in 1946 to produce a result and now India vs England day-night Test saw just 140.2 overs bowled as the home side chased a paltry target of 49 in just 7.4 overs.

A total of 17 wickets fell on the first day of the Test, of which India took ten wickets. Spinners Axar Patel, Ravi Ashwin and Washington Sundar shared all ten wickets between them. While Axar took five wickets, Ashwin took four and Sundar took one wicket.

The shortest ever Test in 1932 remains Australia vs South Africa. However, only 109.2 overs were bowled in that Test. Interestingly, now the third Test match between India and England is India’s shortest Test match, which will overtake India vs Bangladesh in 2019.

With this win, India now leads the four-match series 2–1 with one game to go. A defeat for England means they are out of the World Test Championship final while India needs a win or a draw in the fourth Test to advance.
