Actor Deep Sidhu, Accused In Republic Day Violence Case, Granted Bail

Mumbai: Actor Deep Sidhu, who was arrested in connection with the Republic Day violence at Red Fort during a farmers’ tractor rally, has been granted bail by a Delhi court.

The Delhi Police arrested Sidhu from Zirakpur near Chandigarh in February to inform him of his arrest.

On January 26, chaotic scenes were witnessed in many parts of the national capital during the Farmers’ Tractor Parade on the occasion of the 72nd Republic Day, as a section of farmers protested the Center’s new agricultural laws ahead of schedule.

The protesters entered the ITO in the middle of the national capital and the iconic Red Fort and hoisted flags on its domes and the flagstaff at the ramparts.

Earlier this week, Sidhu’s lawyer told the court that mere presence did not make him part of the unlawful assembly and that he was an honest citizen who was part of a protest.

The government lawyer appearing on behalf of the Delhi Police claimed that Sidhu was the main conductor of the illegal assembly and was believed to oppose violence and defy the national flag.

Opposing Sidhu’s bail plea, the prosecutor claimed that upon release, Sidhu would destroy the evidence as he had destroyed two phones when he was arrested.
