Andhra Pradesh Govt To Withdraw Bills To Create 3 Capital Cities

Mumbai: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to withdraw the bills for creating three capitals for the state in place of the existing Amaravati.

The state government had brought in the AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020, intended to establish the executive, judicial and legislative capitals at Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, and Amaravati.

The cabinet decided to repeal two laws passed in June 2020. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development (Repeal) Act was passed in 2015 by the previous Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government to end the right to develop Amaravati as the state capital.

The AP Decentralization and Inclusive Development of All Regions Act were passed to establish executive, judicial and legislative capitals at Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and Amaravati.

Minister of State Kodali Nani told reporters that Reddy would make a detailed statement on the move in the assembly later on Monday.

State Advocate General Subrahmanyam Sriram informed the High Court about the decision of the cabinet.

A division bench of the court is hearing a batch of petitions against the decision to form the three capitals from November 15. The two laws were challenged in court by the farmers who gave their more than 34,000 acres of fertile land to set up the capital at Amaravati.
