Bail Granted To Rahul Gandhi In Ahmedabad Bank Defamation Case On Rs 15,000 Bond

Mumbai: Another relief for Congress former chief Rahul Gandhi, as he has been granted bail in the criminal defamation suit filed against him by Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank and its chairman Ajay Patel.

During the hearing, when a metropolitan court judge asked him if he accepted his crime, Rahul Gandhi said, “I am not a criminal.”

Rahul Gandhi was present in the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court for hearing of defamation case.
The court granted bail to Rahul Gandhi on a bond of Rs 15,000.

The defamation suit, last year, Gandhi and Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala had claimed that Ahmedabad district co-operative bank “scam” to swap Rs 745.59 crore in swapped notes with valid currency within five days of demonetisation announcement on November 8, 2016.

The court issued summons on April 9 after the two leaders got their first evidence against them. The complainants said that Congress leaders have “charged with false and defamatory charges” against the bank.

The court had conducted an inquiry under Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before summoning Gandhi and Surjewala. To determine whether there is sufficient land for proceeding against any person, it is related to section inquiry.

The allegations of Gandhi and Surjewala were based on an answer given to the RTI query of an activist of Mumbai by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

ADCB and Patel have denied that the bank has allegedly exchanged such a large amount of currency exchanged with the exchange.
