BMC Collects Fine Worth Rs 24 Lakh From 12,000 People For Spitting In Public

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected over Rs 24,89,100 in fines within a span of six months from around 12,000 people who were caught spitting in open/public spaces in Mumbai.

The step is a part of the measures to contain the further spread of coronavirus as well as Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.

To clamp down on the spread of COVID19, the State government had last May. It imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 for spitting in public. However, BMC continues to impose a fine of only Rs 200 on the offenders.

Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court had asked the BMC, the police and the state government to take appropriate steps to sensitise officials and the public at large towards the spitting in view of the pandemic.

However, Out of 24 administrative wards, the L ward tops the chart of the highest number of offenders. L ward includes Sakinaka and Kurla. Almost 3.52 lakh fines have been collected. 3.29 lakh fine has been collected from A ward which includes Nariman point and Colaba.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra has been witnessing coronavirus cases as the state reported 63,729 COVID19 cases, 398 deaths on Friday.
