Cannot Afford To Have A Military Escalation: India On Russia-Ukraine Crisis

Mumbai: India on Tuesday said that the escalation of tension between Ukraine and Russia is a “matter of deep concern” and said that India cannot afford to have a military escalation.

Speaking at an emergency meeting convened by the UN Security Council on the Ukraine crisis, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti said, “We are closely following the developments relating to Ukraine and the related announcement by Russia. These developments have the potential to undermine peace and security of the region.”

“We strongly emphasise the vital need for all sides to maintain international peace and security by exercising the utmost restraint. We cannot afford to have a military escalation. The escalation of tension along the border of Ukraine with Russia is a matter of deep concern,” India added.

He further underlined that while the safety of citizens is essential, adding to the well-being of Indians is the priority of the government.

“More than 20,000 Indian students and citizens live and study in different parts of Ukraine including its border areas. The well-being of Indians is a priority for us,” Tirumurti said.

The Indian envoy said that India stands by the critical need of all parties to maintain international peace and security by exercising “extreme restraint” and intensifying diplomatic efforts to ensure that a “mutually amicable solution” is arrived at the earliest.

Tirumurti also emphasized that “there is a need to make room for the recent steps taken by the parties which are trying to defuse the tension”.

The UNSC meeting is being held at the request of Ukraine, the US and six other countries.

In recent weeks, Russia has deployed tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine’s borders, raising fears of an invasion.

Russia has been saying it has no plans to take aggressive action against Ukraine, but its actions are unlikely to convince the West so far.
