CBI Court Reserves Order On Five Day Remand Application For Chidambaram

Mumbai: The CBI court had reserved the order on an application seeking five-day remand of the former finance minister, P. Chidambaram. P. Chidambaram was accused of corruption involving the INX media. He was arrested on the basis of a warrant issued by a competent court after the statement of Indrani Mukerjee.

Chidambaram’s lawyers slammed the CBI for the way they hunted down the former finance minister’s image.

The senior advocate said that if they were suspicious of Chidambaram’s activities in INX Media they could have written a letter and asked for the that are alleged to be in his possession rather than directly lashing out at him.

He also claimed that the CBI couldn’t call Chidambaram as evasive.

The lawyer further added that Chidambaram wasn’t a flight risk and that he couldn’t answer what they want to hear. Abhishek Manu Sanghvi also added that CBI couldn’t call him not cooperating just because he didn’t answer what they wanted him to.

“Non-cooperation is if the probe agency calls me five times and I don’t go, non-cooperation is not giving the answer they want to hear… they called P. Chidambaram once and he went… where is non- cooperation in this?”

“Chidambaram said for himself, “People look for the questions and answers, there are no questions which I have not answered, please read the transcript. They asked if I have a bank account abroad I said No they asked if my son had a bank account abroad I said yes.”

The CBI’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, “right to interrogate is my duty, duty to the nation under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC ). We are merely seeking the court’s permission to interrogate the accused further”
