Centre Defends CAA Before Supreme Court, Calls It Legal, Constitution

Mumbai: Taking a stand on the government’s recently implemented Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Narendra Modi-led Center on Tuesday claimed that the law does not violate fundamental rights.

“The CAA does not prohibit any existing rights of a citizen. In response to arguments challenging the constitutional validity of the controversial act, the Center said in a 129-page affidavit that it would not affect the legal, democratic or secular rights of the people.”

Terming it as’ legal and constitutional ‘, the Center said that the act cannot be questioned as it is a matter related to the sovereign power of Parliament’.

It also stated that the CAA does not confer any arbitrary and undisclosed powers on the executive as persecuted minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be granted citizenship, as specified under the law granting citizenship.

Last year, the Supreme Court decided to investigate the constitutional validity of the CAA but refused to ban its operation.
