Centre Rejects Mamata Banerjee’s Appeal To Rename ‘West Bengal’ As Bengal

Mumbai: Another political demonstration could be started between the TMC and the BJP-led central government, as the government recently rejected Mamta Banerjee’s proposal to change the name of West Bengal to ‘Bangla’.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for the name change in the state. Banerjee had requested to start an amendment in the current session of Parliament.

However, the Home Ministry on Wednesday informed the Rajya Sabha through a written reply stating that the Centre has not cleared the renaming of the state to ‘Bangla’.

Meanwhile, Mamta Banerjee was reportedly unhappy that the major issues of West Bengal would be unrecoverable because the name of the state was at the bottom of the list. She claimed that as long as state issues are not addressed, most of the house is empty.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee had sought a change in the name of West Bengal State in a proposal in July 2018 for ease of doing business in Parliament.

Earlier, in 2016, the centre had rejected the proposal by the West Bengal Government to give three names to the state – Bangla in Bangla, Bengal in English and Bengali in Hindi. The centre was asked to submit a single name to the proposal.
