Chief Of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, His Wife And 11 Others Die In Helicopter Crash

Mumbai: Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others have died in the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force tweeted.

Reports said that 14 passengers including crew members were on board the unfortunate helicopter, which reportedly crashed on its way from Sulur to Wellington due to low visibility in foggy conditions. It is being told that 11 out of 14 passengers died in the accident.

Rawat had taken a flight from Delhi to Sulur earlier in the day and there were nine people on that flight. Five more were involved in the flight to Sulur.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is about to inform the Parliament of this accident. He had already spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi before going to Rawat’s Delhi residence.

According to passenger details, besides Rawat and his wife, Brigadier LS Lidder, Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Singh, NK Gursewak Singh, NK Jitendra Kr, L/Naik Vivek Kumar, L/Naik B Sai Teja and Hav Satpal were travelling in the Mi-17VH chopper.

Rawat had taken over as India’s first chief of defence staff (CDS) on December 31, 2019, after serving as the army chief for a full three-year term.
