A helicopter carrying India’s Defense Chief General Bipin Rawat crashed on Wednesday, the Air Force said, killing at least seven people, a government minister at the scene said.

Rawat is India’s first Chief of Defense Staff, a position that the government established in 2019, and is seen as close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Indian Air Force said the 63-year-old was travelling with his wife and 12 others in a Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter that “had an accident near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu today”.

It is not clear whether Rawat survived the accident or not.

Footage from the scene showed crowds trying to douse the debris of the fire with buckets of water, while a group of soldiers carried one of the passengers on an improvised stretcher.

According to the Times of India, Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K. Ramachandran said that at least seven bodies have been recovered.
