Continuous Rain Causes Waterlogging In Chennai, Red Alert For 8 TN Districts, Puducherry

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a red alert for eight districts in Tamil Nadu namely, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kallakurichi, Salem, Vellore, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Thiruvannamalai and Puducherry amid heavy rains.

Due to heavy rains in the Union Territory, many low-lying areas of Puducherry have also been inundated. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain in Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

IMD chief Mrityunjay Mohapatra told Times Now Today, “The depression is located 127 km south-east of Chennai. For Chennai, we are expecting heavy rainfall activity today,” Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD Chief told Times Now earlier today.

11 subways, namely – Vyasarpadi, Ganeshpuram, Ajaxs, Gangu Reddy, Madley, Duraiswamy, Palavanthangal, Tambaram, Aranganathan, Villivakkam and Kakhan Bridge subways have been closed due to heavy waterlogging in Chennai.

The following roads have also been closed for vehicular traffic and public movement by the administration. They include – KK Nagar, Mylapore, EVR Salai, Sembeium, K-5 Peravallur, Pulianthope – Dr Ambedkar Road, Vyasarpadi.

11 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and seven companies of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed across the state in rain-hit areas of Tamil Nadu.

The state government has also deployed 1.05 lakh volunteers to deal with the floods caused by rains in Tamil Nadu. IMD has issued a red warning for Chennai on Thursday. This means that Chennai and neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram may receive heavy to very heavy rains on Thursday.

The IMD said moderate rains have been predicted in Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kanyakumari, Thirunelveli and Thenkasi districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Meanwhile, eight flights have been cancelled at the Chennai airport due to bad weather. The Meteorological Department has cancelled four arrivals and four departures after heavy rains lashed Chennai and adjoining districts.
