The ED team along with a large number of police and central police forces reached Deshmukh’s residence in Nagpur.

Hitting out at Deshmukh, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader would be in jail in a few days.

Somaiya tweeted, “ED raided Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s Vasooli Minister Anil Deshmukh residence. I am sure in few days he will be in Jail. Another VASOOLI Minister Anil Parab will follow Anil Deshmukh.”

He further alleged that Deshmukh has parked scam money in his family companies, adding that “Chhagan Bhujbal (NCP leader) was in jail for three years for a similar kind of scam”.

It may be recalled that the senior NCP leader had resigned as Maharashtra Home Minister after former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleging corruption against Deshmukh.

The ED had recently registered a criminal case under the Anti-Money Laundering Act against 71-year-old Deshmukh and others on May 11, after going through a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR.

The CBI had on April 24 registered a case against Deshmukh on charges of abuse of office and corruption. The agency said its preliminary investigation found that Sachin Waze, who was reinstated into the Mumbai Police after being out of service for over 15 years, “was entrusted with most of the sensational and important cases of the city police” and Deshmukh knew about it.

On April 6, the CBI had filed a preliminary inquiry after the Bombay High Court asked the agency to investigate the allegations of bribery and misuse of office against Deshmukh by Param Bir Singh.

Soon after the ruling, Deshmukh quit his post. Senior NCP leader Dilip Walse-Patil was appointed in his place.
