Extraordinary! I Couldn’t Believe The Way Cummins Was Hitting: Shreyas Iyer

Mumbai: KKR captain Shreyas Iyer said he couldn’t believe the way pacer Pat Cummins was hitting the ball during their match against MI, which they won by five wickets.

Cummins scored a half-century in just 14 balls and registered the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history. Apart from Cummins, Venkatesh Iyer also played brilliant innings of 50 runs in 41 balls to help KKR win in just 16 overs.

“Extraordinary! The way he (Cummins) was hitting the ball, I couldn’t believe it. Because yesterday in the nets, he was bowling occasionally. I was batting next to him in the nets. Timeout During the season, the plan was for Venky to drop the anchor and ask Pat to swing on everything as he was doing the same thing before,” Shreyas Iyer said in the post-match presentation.

“When I went to bat, I asked him to time the ball as he was heating the ball a bit. We have to take responsibility as top-order batsmen. We all have the ability to hit the ball long enough. There’s potential. There’s potential. There’s potential. The pitch in the powerplays in both the innings was pretty much the same. After the powerplays, I think it became a lot easier,” he added.

Opener Venkatesh Iyer was joined by captain Shreyas Iyer, who left the team on a total of 35/2 after being caught by Tilak Verma off Daniel Sams in the sixth over.

Sam Billings comes to the crease and gives some momentum to KKR along with Venkatesh. Billings then fell victim to a spell from Murugan Ashwin and went on to score 67/3 in the 10th over with KKR scoring a brief 12-ball 17.

Nitish Rana also joined with Venkatesh standing firmly at one end. KKR lost another wicket in the 12th over as Murugan Ashwin dismissed Nitish for just 8 runs.

Andre Russell was also dismissed for 11 runs in the 14th over at a total of 83/4. The dismissal of Russell invited Pat Cummins to the crease, who then changed the whole face of the match.

He thrashed the MI bowlers at every corner of the ground and played a knock of 56 runs off 15 balls to bring KKR home with a five-wicket victory, in just 16 overs.
