Extremely Upset Over Media Reports On SC Judges’ Appointments: CJI NV Ramana

Mumbai: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has said he’s “extremely upset” over “speculative” media reports on the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendations on new judges.

Emphasizing the process of appointment of judges as ” sacrosanct ” and the “dignity” attached to it, the CJI said the media should understand and recognize its sanctity.

The Chief Justice also said that “speculative media reports” on the appointments are unfavourable even before the proposals are formalised.

“Such irresponsible reporting and speculation were worthy examples of the career progression of bright talents getting marred. It is very unfortunate and I am deeply disturbed by it,” he said while speaking at the farewell function of Judge Navin Sinha.

“I appreciate the tremendous amount of maturity and responsibility displayed by majority of senior journalists and media houses in not speculating on such serious matter. Such professional journalists and ethical media are the real strength of the Supreme Court in particular and democracy in general,” he added.

Earlier today, reports said that the five-member Supreme Court Collegium headed by CJI Ramana has recommended nine names for appointment as judges in the apex court.

The names that have been recommended for elevation to the top court include Justice BV Nagarathna of the Karnataka High Court, who may become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.

Besides Justice Nagarathna, two other women judges have been shortlisted for an appointment – Chief Justice of Telangana High Court Justice Hima Kohli and Gujarat High Court Judge Bela Trivedi, PTI reported citing sources.

According to sources, the other names are a senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General PS Narasimha, Justices Abhay Srinivas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, CT Ravi Kumar and MM Sundar.
