Facebook To Check Identity Of Indian Political Advertisers In Upcoming 2019 Election

Mumbai :  To run political ads on Facebook, Indian advertisers have to confirm, their identity and location which will help to prevent abuse of the system in the build-up to national elections.

After analysing all the following Cambridge Analytica scandal it said that, “it would start verifying ads from Thursday and, from next year, show a disclaimer on all political ads giving more information on who placed them.”

Due to upcoming national election it is clear that each party would turn out towards social media to get their messages out to the country’s millions of voters.

“By authorizing advertisers and bringing more transparency to ads, we can better defend against foreign interference in India’s elections,” Facebook said on its website.

Earlier the company announced similar process for advertisers seeking to run political ads in the United Kingdom.

After consultant Cambridge Analyca, Facebook is being investigated by lawmakers in the UK, who worked on Donald Trump’s US presidential campaign, received personal data from 87 million Facebook users from the researcher.

Anxiety on social media giant practices, the role of political advertising and the break vote in 2016 and the US. Potential foreign interference in elections is one of the subjects being examined by British and European regulators.

Earlier in March India’s information technology minister warned against any misuse of social media in elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ruling party BJP are regular users of social media websites which also include Facebook. Meantime the opposition Congress Party has also expanded its visibility on digital platforms.
