Farmers Have Right To Protest But Not To Block Roads: Supreme Court To Farmers Union

The court had served notice to 43 farmers' organisations on an application seeking to make their parties before the top court

Mumbai: Supreme Court on Thursday has said that the farmers have the right to protest but they cannot block the roads indefinitely.

The apex court has asked the farmers’ unions to file their response on the petition seeking removal of protesting farmers from roads.

The court was hearing a PIL against the blockade of roads between Delhi to Noida due to farmers’ protests against the three agriculture laws.

The court will study the responses of farmers and continue hearing on December 7.

Earlier, on Monday, the court had served notice to 43 farmers’ organisations on an application seeking to make their parties before the top court.

The court had also asked the farmer bodies “What are you protesting for,” when the three farm laws have been stayed by the apex court.

The court had observed that if the farmers had the right to peacefully protest, the citizens of Delhi also had the right to free movement.

The farmer unions called for a Bharat Bandh to protest against the laws on September 27. In response to a question on the inconvenience caused to common citizens due to farmer protests and Bharat Bandh, Rakesh Tikait, leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union had said that it was ‘okay if the public experienced inconvenience for one day.
