FIR Filed Against 1,000 Unidentified AMU Students For Dec 15 Violence

Mumbai: An FIR has been registered in connection with violence against 1,000 unidentified students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), which erupted on 15 December during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The students have been accused of rioting, detention of a public servant and endangering the lives of others such as the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984 and Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1932.

The FIR, which was filed on 24 December on a complaint filed by the Commandant 104 Battalion, stated that at 8:30 pm on 15 December, more than 10,000 students gathered around the university’s circle to protest.

“They shouted non-national slogans. The students threw stones at the personnel and also vandalized official vehicles,” the FIR said.

Police were directed to use the least amount of force to disperse the protesters. “When they did not disperse, tear gas and low-intensity sticks were charged.”

The complainant demanded an investigation into the case. Police and protesters clashed on 15 December following violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The act grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Zoroastrians, Buddhists and Christians from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, and came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
