Mary Kom Defeats 23-Year-Old Nikhat Zareen, Refuses To Shake Hands With Her

Mumbai: Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom qualified for next year’s Olympic qualifier in China by defeating Nikhat Zarin in a 51 kg class trial bout on Saturday.

Mary Kom won the match 9–1 to earn a place in the squad. However, tensions inside the arena were tense due to bitter rowing over Zren’s public demand for a trial.

“I was a little angry. There is no doubt about it. But it is complete now I have moved on. All I say is talk once, not before that. Everyone can see what you do in the ring, ”Mary Kom told PTI after the boxing.

Zarin tried to hug her after the match but Mary Kom did not respond. “They call it clinching in our sport,” she said when asked about it.

On the other hand, Zaren disagreed and said, “I am hurt by how she behaved.” She also did some dishonesty inside the ring, but that’s okay.

Meanwhile, Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh had to step in to control the situation after AP Reddy, claiming to represent the Telangana Boxing Association, vociferously opposed the verdict.

“How boxing would flourish in the midst of such politics,” Reddy later told reporters when asked by Singh to leave ringside and frustrated Zarin calmed himself.
