Government Rejects Alok Verma’s Resignation, Asks To Rejoin For One Day

Mumbai:  Recently Alok Verma who refused to take the new post of Director General, Fire Safety, Civil Defence and Home Guard and the day he resigned from his post, the government has now rejected his resignation from the service.

Verma is the former director of the Central Bureau of Investigation in India.  He was the 27th Director of the CBI, the highest executive position in the premier federal agency until he was removed from this post on allegations of corruption. His removal ensued a controversy in India and was questioned by legal experts and opposition leaders because of the absence of any evidence to prove the charges against him.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has rejected his resignation where they asked him to rejoin the work for one day, today is the date Alok Verma would have retired from service.

Alok Verma has been asked to work as Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defense and Home Guards A post was transferred after Alok Verma was removed from the position of CBI Director.

Verma was entangled in a bribery controversy along with Rakesh Asthana, Special Director CBI in a corruption scandal; both accused each other of bribery and subsequently asked to go on leave by the Government, on the recommendation of the Central Vigilance Commission.

The entire controversy of his removal has questioned the independence of the CBI as a premier investigating agency in the country. Former Chief Justice of India, R M Lodha who coined the phrase “caged parrot” for the Central Bureau of Investigation’s plight as a prisoner of government’s demands also commented on how it’s independence needed to be preserved

Verma through a press release said that he was trying to “uphold CBI’s integrity” but was removed on baseless allegations by one person (Asthana) who was inimical to him. He later refused to take the post of DG, Fire Safety, Civil Defence and Home Guard. In his letter to DoPT, he said that did not get an opportunity to present his case. “Natural justice was scuttled and the entire process was turned upside down in ensuring that the undersigned is removed from the post of the Director CBI”, Verma added.
