Govt Issues Advisory For Social Media Platforms To Curb false News On COVID-19

Mumbai: In view of the catastrophic situation due to the outbreak of coronavirus in the country, the Government of India has issued advisory for all social media platforms to take responsibility for misinformation related to coronaviruses on their feeders, and to ensure that they do not get any false news.

The consultant wrote, “The outbreak of the coronavirus (Coved-19) has become a global concern with the World Health Organization, declaring it a global health emergency.” Countries around the world are trying their best to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. However, it has been reported in the media that there is a trend among the various social media platforms to spread panic and disinformation/misinformation related to the coronavirus among the public. ”

The government has asked social media platforms to launch awareness campaigns on its platforms for users, who take immediate action to deactivate such information-spreading content, and this has allowed websites to forward authentic information related to the coronavirus.

“Social media platforms are intermediaries defined under section 2111 (w) of the Information Technology Act,” the consultant said, binding social media to follow the rules under section 2111 (w) of the Information Technology Act. It is necessary to follow the prescribed diligence as provided in the Information Technology (Interim Guidelines) Rules 2071 under Section 79 of 2000 and IT Act. ”

Amidst the growing coronavirus cases around the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday announced a large global trial called SOLIDARITY to find out if a drug or drug combination could treat an infection caused by the deadly virus May or not.

Some social media platforms like WhatsApp are also launching official helplines to prevent the spread of misleading information, through which factual information should be easier for users to access.
