Blanks Found In Payal Tadvi’s Suicide Case, HC Pulls Up Police

Mumbai: The police investigating the Dr Payal Tadvi suicide case said BYL Nair Hospital’s gynaecology department head and others may face “disciplinary action” for offence under the antiragging law.

The Bombay High Court pulled up the prosecution for ‘lacunae’ in investigation. The observations came while the prosecution was reading out details from the charge sheet filed in the case.

The judge sought to know what action the police intended to take against gynaecology department head, Dr Yi Ching Ling, for allegedly not considering harassment complaints made by her husband Dr Salman Tadvi and mother Abeda Tadvi.

Justice Sadhana Jadhav, who was presiding over the matter, ‘enquired’ with the crime branch if action was being taken against Dr Yi Ching Ling, who heads Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at the BYL Nair Hospital for ‘shirking responsibility’.

“Despite the fact that several colleagues of Dr Tadvi who were made witnesses in the case were in a vulnerable position now as they continued to be at the hospital, the Crime Branch had failed to record their statements before a magistrate under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” Justice Jadhav said.

Justice Jadhav also suggested that their medical licenses should be terminated at least until the trial. The medical profession is no more a noble one.
