HC Asks CBI To Probe Corruption Charges Against Anil Deshmukh Within 15 Days

Mumbai: Bombay High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into corruption allegations levelled by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh against Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

The court ordered the investigating agency to conclude a preliminary inquiry within 15 days.

The High Court was hearing a petition of Dr Jaishri Patil. “The Bombay High Court has asked the CBI director to conduct a preliminary inquiry within 15 days and file an FIR if any cognizable offence is found,” Patil told reporters outside the court, news agency ANI quoted.

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh alleged in a letter that Deshmukh was operating a ‘extortion’ racket through some officers of the Mumbai Police. The Opposition, led by BJP leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had demanded Deshmukh’s resignation, even as leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi had defended the leader, saying he was under quarantine during the period mentioned by Singh.

Singh, in his petition, reiterated the allegations written against Deshmukh to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Singh moved to Bombay HC after the Supreme Court refused to give his arguments on the matter. Singh had challenged the Maharashtra government’s order to transfer him from the post of Maharashtra Police Commissioner.
