Heavy Rains Hit Gujarat, 56 Roads Closed Due To Water-Logging & Damage

Gujarat: Heavy rainfall lashed various parts of Gujarat in the last 24 hours, causing water-logging and damage at several locations, following which 56 roads in the state have been closed for vehicular movement, the Gujarat government said on Monday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast an “active wet spell” in the state until July 27.

According to the IMD’s latest forecast, heavy rain is very likely at isolated places in some districts in the next 24 hours and fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea till July 29.

Data from the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) showed that most parts of Gujarat, including Saurashtra, received heavy to moderate rains in the 24-hour period ending at 6 am on Monday.

The SEOC said that Lodhika taluka in Saurashtra’s Rajkot district received the highest rainfall of 198 mm during this period.

According to the release, 56 roads including one national highway, 54 panchayat roads and one unclassified road remained closed due to heavy rains, but all national highways passing through the state remained open.

It added that over the last 24 hours, Chhotaudepur taluka of Chhotaudepur district received 190 mm, followed by Kwant in Chhotaudepur (182 mm), Becharaji in Mehsana (160 mm), Kalavad in Jamnagar (147 mm), Tilakwada in Narmada (147 mm), Botad taluka in Botad (146 mm), Kaprada in Valsad (142 mm), Manavadar in Junagadh (134 mm), and Kutiana in Porbandar (128 mm).

The release further said that districts including Mahidagar, Kheda, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Aravalli, Morbi, Gir-Somnath, Tapi, Ahmedabad and Dahod recorded significant rainfall of 60 mm to 100 mm during the last 24 hours.

According to the IMD’s latest forecast, heavy rain is very likely at isolated places over Jamnagar, Valsad, Gir-Somnath districts and adjoining Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu in the next 24 hours.
