Hurriyat Chief Mirwaiz Umar Released From House Arrest After 4 Years

Mumbai: Hurriyat Conference chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was released from house arrest on Friday, four years after he was taken into detention. After his release, Mirwaiz led Friday prayers at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid, where a large crowd of supporters was seen shouting slogans and showering flowers on him.

There was a sizable group of fans cheering Farooq on and presenting him with flowers at the Jama Masjid. Since Article 370 was repealed in August 2019, the separatist leader has been placed under house arrest. He will be permitted to participate in the Friday congregational prayers at the revered Jamia Masjid in the Nowhatta neighbourhood, according to representatives of the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, the mosque’s management committee, earlier.

“Senior police officials visited the residence of the Mirwaiz on Thursday to inform him that the authorities have decided to release him from house detention and allow him to go to Jamia Masjid for Friday prayers,” the Auqaf said in a statement.

Days after filing a complaint with the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the head of many religious organisations and the chairman of the separatist Hurriyat Conference, was freed. The Jammu and Kashmir government was given four weeks from September 15 to file a response to the Mirwaiz’s appeal by the court.

On August 5, 2019, the day the BJP-led Centre repealed the provisions of Article 370 and divided the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into Union territories, the Hurriyat leader was placed under house arrest at his Nigeen residence. PTI SSB MIJ RC.

The union territory government was given notice last week by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to respond to a case filed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq about his house imprisonment since August 2019 as a result of Article 370’s repeal.

The petitioner (Mirwaiz) has been detained/house arrest at his Nigeen residence without any order or authority in law, according to news agency PTI, so the separatist leader filed a writ petition in the high court “seeking an order, or direction upon the respondents (state authorities) to release the petitioner (Mirwaiz) from “illegal and unauthorized detention.”
