IAF Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa & Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman Flew MiG-21 Fighter Aircraft

Mumbai: Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman, along with Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, flew in a MiG-21 combat aircraft from Pathankot airbase on Monday.

On 15 August Abhinandan was awarded the prestigious Vir Chakra Award. The Veer Chakra is the third highest gallantry award in India after the Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra.

Indian Air Force chief BS Dhanoa who flew today’s sortie with Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman is also a MiG-21 pilot and had flown the fighter jet during the 1999 Kargil conflict while commanding the IAF’s 17 Squadron.

Abhinandan was apprehended by the Pakistan Army after he joined an aerial dogfight with a Pakistan Air Force aircraft on 27 February, which was violating Indian airspace. Before being shot down, Wing Commander Abhinandan knocked down the PAF’s F-16 by his MiG-21 Bison.
