India Becomes First Country To Successfully Land Spacecraft Near Moon’s South Pole

Mumbai: With the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander on the lunar surface, India has become the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the Moon’s south pole.

The landing will be followed by the rollout of the Pragyan rover, the ISRO said.

“India is on the moon,” S. Somanath, chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said as the Chandrayaan-3, lander made a “soft landing” on the lunar surface.

“This is a victory cry of new India,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who watched the final moment before touchdown from Johannesburg where he is attending the BRICS summit.

Modi believed that the accomplishment of the mission would encourage investment in commercial space launches and satellite-related enterprises.

Chandrayaan-3’s mission

Future expeditions and a lunar colony may be able to obtain oxygen, fuel, and water from the moon’s south pole.

It is anticipated that Chandrayaan-3 will spend two weeks exploring it and conducting a number of tests to ascertain the mineral makeup of the lunar surface.

A number of nations, including the US, China, Israel, and Japan, want to establish bases on the moon.

Only the former Soviet Union, China, and the United States have successfully made a controlled landing on the moon before.
