There have been 2,859 black fungus cases in Gujarat, followed by 2,770 in Maharashtra, followed by 768 in Andhra Pradesh.

Delhi has so far reported 620 cases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday, but data shared by Gowda said there are 119 cases in the national capital.

Mucormycosis is more common in people whose immunity is reduced due to those taking medications for diseases such as COVID-19, diabetes, kidney disease, liver or heart disorders, age-related problems, or rheumatoid arthritis.

The disease manifests as an infection of the skin in the air pocket located behind the forehead, nose, cheekbones and between the eyes and teeth. It then spreads to the eyes, lungs and can also spread to the brain. It leads to blackening or discolouration over the nose, blurred or double vision, chest pain, breathing difficulties and coughing of blood.

Meanwhile, ten states have so far declared it as a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Disease Act. A notifiable disease is required by law to be reported to the government authorities.
