India Reports 27,409 COVID-19 Cases, 347 Deaths In 24 Hours

Mumbai: India has reported 27,409 new COVID-19 cases and 347 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The daily positivity rate in the country has also dropped to 2.23 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate has come down to 3.63 per cent. With this, India’s current active caseload stands at 4,23,127, which is 0.99 per cent of the total cases.

A total of 75.30 crore tests have been conducted in India so far, with 12,29,536 tests in the last 24 hours, according to ministry data. In the last 24 hours, 82,817 patients have been cured, due to which a total of 4,17,60,458 patients have been cured of this virus.

There have also been 347 deaths due to COVID in the last 24 hours in the country. A total of 173.42 crore vaccine doses have been given so far in the country under the nationwide vaccination campaign.

There has been a significant increase in COVID cases since the introduction of the Omicron variant last year. After witnessing the second wave in April-May last year, the COVID-19 cases in India began to decline in the subsequent months and the daily infection spike reached 5,326 new cases on December 21.

Meanwhile, the Omicron version (b.1.1.529), a newer version of the coronavirus, was first reported in Botswana on November 11, 2021, and appeared in South Africa on November 14.

India detected its first Omicron case in Karnataka on December 2 last year. After the emergence of the Omicron variant, the daily cases started rising by the end of December and crossed the 1 lakh mark on 7 January when 1,17,100 new infections were reported.
