We Don’t Interfere In Other’s Way Of Practising Religion: Bihar CM

Mumbai: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar reacted to the ‘hijab’ controversy and said it’s not an issue in the state as people respect each other’s religious sentiments.

Kumar, whose party shares power with the BJP in Bihar, said it was not an issue in his state where religious sentiments are respected.

Kumar said, “If someone puts something on the head in class, there is no need to comment on it. It is not an issue in Bihar, we should not focus on such things…. It’s useless. The matter has gone to court,” Kumar told reporters at a programme.

He said, “Children in Bihar schools wear almost the same type of dress. If someone puts something on the head then there is no need to comment on it. We do not interfere in such matters. We respect religious sentiments of each other,” he said in his public outreach programme, ‘Janata Ke Darbaar Mein Mukhyamantri’.

The Chief Minister further said that all are equal for the state government.

The controversy surrounding the hijab in BJP-ruled Karnataka began a few weeks ago when some girl students in hijab were denied admission to a government pre-university college in Udupi. In response, some Hindu students started wearing saffron scarves in college.

The incident led to widespread protests for and against the hijab in various parts of the state, which turned violent in some places.

Following the incident, the state government in an order said that students in schools and pre-university colleges across the state should only follow the uniform prescribed by it or the management of private institutions.

The Karnataka High Court has barred all students, regardless of their religion or faith, from wearing any kind of religious dress, till further orders, on petitions challenging the ban along with the dress code in educational institutions.
