Indian Citizen Don’t Have To Prove Ancestry With Pre-1971 Documents: MHA

Mumbai: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday clarified that a well-laid out procedure would be followed to ensure that no Indian citizen is unduly harassed or inconvenienced.

An MHA spokesperson clarified that a comprehensive ‘list is likely to include a lot of common documents’ to facilitate smooth enrollment for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

“Illiterate citizens, who have no documents, authorities can allow them to produce community-backed witnesses or local evidence. A well-laid-out procedure will be followed,” the MHA spokesman said.

The spokesperson further said that Indian citizens ‘do not have to prove any lineage by presenting documents like identity card, birth certificate, etc. of parents/grandparents who returned to the pre-1971 situation.’
