India’s 3rd Case Of Monkeypox Confirmed In Man Who Returned To Kerala From UAE

Mumbai: Country’s third monkeypox case has been confirmed in a 35-year-old man who returned to Malappuram from UAE on July 6th, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said.

Health Minister Veena George said the Malappuram native had come to the southern state on July 6 and was undergoing treatment at the Manjeri Medical College there. He said that his health condition is stable. The minister also said that those who were in close contact with the patient are being closely monitored.

The first case of monkeypox was reported on July 14 in the country’s southern district of Kollam, another migrant who had returned from the United Arab Emirates. He is undergoing treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and Hospital.

The Union Health Ministry had sent an expert medical team to the state on July 16 and its members visited the homes, medical colleges and other places of the infected. Later, doctors found that he was infected with a West African strain of the virus.

Kerala on Monday reported its second case of monkeypox in the Kannur district of the state. George indicated that the condition of the patient admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Pariyaran was stable.

According to experts, the monkeypox virus mutates at a high rate but it is treatable and treatment varies with symptoms. He said that the infection starts with fever, headache and flu. As the infection intensifies, red sores appear on the body and trigger chickenpox-like itching.

They said the incubation period of the virus ranges from five to 21 days. The transmission will happen only through close contact like touching, sharing clothes, towels or sex with the infected person as secretion from lesions carries a high virus load.
